Default Torque converter hop even with od off

Now I hope to change the filter and fluid tommorow, we have sort of touched on this in other posts, but what are causes and fixes for this. And would I need to replace the tc, or have a whole tranny rebuild. I just bought the truck and don't have a history on it, but it goes into overdrive fine and seems to work itself out.

Default it is

worse when it goes into 3rd and OD, but even if i am creeping around a parking lot it sometimes feels like i'm pumping the breaks. at high speeds with od off it acts decent and barely noticeable, but if i hit od at 55mph it is pretty bad, then smooths out the faster i go.

The tranny shifts into all gears to soon to me. Works good from a dead stop, and shifts through all the gears, but it will sometimes even with od off hit 3rd at 30mph and i just floor it to get it up to a decent speed for that gear.

your throttle valve may be out of adjustment causing the early upshifts. Sounds like your converter is locking and unlocking, maybe a faulty lockup solenoid.

BOOYAH!!! Lockup solenoid is about to poop. Had the same problem with my 1996. Needed to get another TC and solenoid. THat worked for about 2 years then it happened again. Also, check the linkage from the tranny kickdown ON THE TRANNY, not on the Throttle body. Sometimes it gets really gunked up and that affects the kickdown and might seem like you are shifting too early. Found that out when I had to replace a wiring harness.

Is replacing the torque converter a must when doing the solenoid?? And about how much should all that cost? Thanks again for everyone's help!

I think my truck is having a similar issue. It is very intermittent. Sometimes it will like pop a little and actually bog my truck down, but if I pump the gas a little bit it will smooth out and start to accelerate fine again.

I think the noise is coming from my TC but I am afraid I am going to have to replace it. I would much rather just pop a new sensor in it.

I rebuilt my trans last year and it started doing it shortly after that.

The solenoids run around $35, I think you can even get them at Autozone now. It's not a must to replace the TC unless the lockup clutch is shot. I would try the solenoid first and go from there/
