Let the troubleshooting begin!
Alright, little bit about my baby. 94 ram 1500, Magnum V8 5.2L. 210k miles.
She ran fine up to a few weeks ago when she just went downhill fast on me. Idle is rough as all hell, you hit the throttle and she chokes, sputters, and sometimes stays running.
At first I was considering the cat had clogged on me, but after todays little sessions as I watched the engine die, I noticed the fan actually kick back like it happens when the timing is off and another cylinder is firing before it's supposed too.
What sucks is I have a lot of tools, since I am a boat mechanic. Just not a bloody spark tester. And no codes are being thrown, which I wish they were.
I found a neon tester on amazon I'm ordering tonight finally. So any other helpful tips and tricks you guys can offer I would love them. One question I do have is, what is the timing supposed to be? My truck is old so the manual is long gone. If the timing is off I can determine that very quickly.

ill just add another in there... do it.. that fan kick back, is from the pressure n the exhaust pushing the cylinder back....
it will run better, but sould like a very bad airleak under your truck... cause all your exhaust is running out that small little pinkey sized hole

+1, except for the fact it will sound like an exhaust leak, not an air leak.
JK In any event, it will be loud. And if there is no difference in the way it runs, let us know and we'll go from there.

Alright, finally managed to get the dang O2 sensor off. Went to crank the truck, does not stay running, but it seemed more peppy, more willing to stay running. Ordered a spark tester the other day, will be here Monday. Going to wait till then to run my basic checks, and do a fuel pressure test.
If all those come out clear I'll use my newly acquired hack saw and cut that blasted converter off.

If it worked better with O2 sensor out... that = bad catalytic converter.
Keep in mind if you have emissions testing/inspections in your area, you NEED a converter to pass. If you cut the cat off, BTW, you will most likely get a CEL from the post-cat O2 sensor.
