TB Spacer Debate
Hey everybody,
I have been reading some posts and found that a lot of people have different opinions of the Throttle Body Spacers. I just wanted to see if people would post about the benefits and disadvantages of them. I personally don't even know what it does, and why it would give you more torque or horsepower. I tow a boat and have heard it might be a good mod to give the truck a little more torque, but I have also read that is an expensive paper weight, which I thought was hilarious, but it didn't encourage me much. So, if anyone has more info, post it up.

Well if your under the impression that you want to swirl the air into the chamber... I think the census is that it might work if your fuel is injectected right at the carb -
But if your using another type of injection.
I think that if your fuel is injected straight into the combustion chamber swirling air wont help you.
I myself will be upgrading in this order.
1. Flowmaster Muffer 40 series - ordered today from summitracing.com
2. K&N filterpack - Ordering next month.
3. Gibson shorty headers. Ordering the month after
4. That fastman throttlebody rebuild that everyone raves about. Ordering the month after.
I am giving myself 30 days of driving between upgrades to see what really helps the most for my cash.
Im betting my money on the headers giving me the most power that I can really feel..
Ill tell you all when I do see something.

I agree with zeek.. "Well if your under the impression that you want to swirl the air into the chamber... I think the census is that it might work if your fuel is injectected right at the carb"
the design of the intake manifold kinda kills any benifit of the TB spacer. If it were on an M1 manifold, then maybe there might be benifit to it...

-Change your gears. Your stock gears are probably 3.55. Go with something more like 4.11. This can be pricey since you have to do both front and rear diffs on a 4x4. I am getting mine done in 2 weeks, and it is about $1200.
-If gears are too pricey for you, then make sure your tires are the stock tire size (usually 245/75/16). The stock tire size should be on a label on the inside of the door on the driver side. Driving with the stock tire size will maximize the torque capabilities of your stock gear ratio.
-Install a free flow muffler, Flowmaster or Magnaflow are good choices.
-Install a Fastman bored throttle body. I highly highly recommend it.
-Cold Air Intake is good, but you will get more out of it if you have a bored TB like a Fastman. Doesn't do as much with the stock TB.
-Headers. Expensive, and opinions vary as to the effectiveness of shorties. I haven't pulled the trigger on a set of JBA ceramic shorties yet, but I may yet. I keep hearing rumors that there is a company coming out with long tube headers for a 4x4 2nd gen Ram, but I still waiting to see (I was told this from good sources too).
Good Luck

RE: TB Spacer Debate
OK I had one of the Poweraid spacers on my '02 5.9L Ram and I liked it alot, it definitely added some punch and about .5 mpg. Plus it made a really cool whine that alot of people thought was a supercharger. Now as for actually numbers, I don't have any on the Ram but Steeda did some testing on an '02 Mustang 4.6L (which is injected per cylinder btw) and found an increase of between 5-25hp depending on the additional power adders used. The stock motor made 5hp more with a 1 inch smooth bore tb spacer and showed no difference when using a threaded style. So the movement of the TB 1 inch farther from the manifold for some reason created more power on that vehicle and had nothing to do with swirling the air.

RE: TB Spacer Debate
May I ask how you can tell you got .5 mpg more?
There are just so many things that effect fuel economy. Air in tires - where you drove - how long you idled - and the biggest thing.... How much fuel you put in your tank. Just by filling up at a different station the ground might be at an angle and you get more or less fuel in then the last time you filled up somewhere else. Anyway they claim crazy MPG results if you install the spacer and its just a bad value in my opinion
