1500 to 3500 Conversion

Wow... Both sides blame the other. The guy asks a question, and people claim they respond that it is unsafe. All I saw in response was "Another pointless thread", "Go buy a 3500", etc. That was in no way helpful. Everybody should actually respond with some advice that gets him somewhere. . I don't know a whole lot about converting to a 3500, or even getting close to it, but I don't think there would be any problems with hauling small vehicles if you do it right. Upgrading the suspension would be the biggest advantage.

Hey I understand what its like being a nube, hell I'm nube-ish. But don't come in here with a question you should have done just a little bit of research on and start dropping ghetto bombs on folks who have been in here for a while.

If he is a real owner of tow trucks can he really be that cluless about trucks in general?

You're missing the point. "Somewhere" he wants to go is too far past the line of hazardous to others and not just himself or his property. Thus the only advice left is to do it right which is use the correct vehicle. It gets out of hand when people are told to shut the hell up and to accept the fact that dangerous, ghetto setups are the norm. That is a big .

Just throwing this out there, but if you want a 3500 suspension that can handle what a 3500 can handle on a 1500, what about the tranny. I'm assuming it's a automatic (didn't read threw all of the thread) so...46re. Won't the tranny be the first thing to go? Will it be able to handle the load?

That was my thoughts and why I called him a towmaster. If hes been in the business as long as he says he has, this ain't his first rodeo. I used to do a bit of towing myself so its not a foreign subject to me. I'll go back to my ghetto rig now so I don't cause any more trouble.

Have you considered just using a trailer? You could probably pick up a cheapy at a junkyard fix it up a little and throw a winch on it. That would probably be safer, cheaper and easier than trying to "ghetto rig" your truck. Just my two cents.

Frame wise you trying to put a fulcrum on you're truck, and it most likely won't handle the stress. (Were not talking about a tow hitch or 5th wheel here.)
Putting a dana 70 or 80 and 3500 suspension on the rear is not nearly enough.

I have to agree with most others here the BEST solution if you must use the 1500 is to take the body off the and put it on the 3500 frame, and go from there.
But it would be easier to buy a used 2nd gen 3500 (even a heavily used one)

I dont see this guy coming back on now, but how much weight would this tow swing be? and he said it would only be for small cars maybe a small van which i would say a weight of 3000 max probrably less. How much weight would be payload and tow? dont know much about repo but this doesnt sound like anything outrageous for a 1500
