Default Which transmission solenoid

I believe I am going to need a new transmission solenoid in my 1998 Dodge 1500 4x4 318engine . When I look the part up online there are a few different choices of solenoids. How do I know which one fits my tranny, do I have to drop the pan to ID it, or is another way. I am not sure of which transmission I have, I was under the assumption that it was the 46re, now I am not sure
Thanks

Take a look here

Is it throwing codes, what makes you think you need new sensors ?

Do you know the name of the solenoid? Is it the trans gov solenoid or the overdrive solenoid?

Sorry for the lack of info. The trans will not shift into 3rd ,and at times shifts from 1st to 2nd at differemt rpms. I do not have any codes as of now. I would like to order the parts online but am unsure of which part I need. Different looking selonoids come up for my year truck.

Is your fluid level Ok ?
I'd be hard pressed to recommend a swap without codes, then again its a fairly simple procedure and not too expensive.

These here are what you want, if in fact thats the problem http://tinyurl.com/yzr9tt2

It may very well be that the parts are the same, but the link you posted is for parts on a 42 and 44RE, not specifically for a 46RE.
