Default Security System Issues

I just purchased a '99 Dodge Ram SLT Laramie last Friday. Its been driving fine all weekend, but I went out last night to start it up and as soon as I put the key in the door and unlocked it, the security system went off. (IE the lights flash and the horn sounds). I tried locking/unlocking the doors, starting the engine, disconnecting the battery, letting the alarm turn itself off (which it doesnt), but nothing has worked so far.

Now the engine won't start at all..
I do not have the remote lock/unlock to silence the alarm.

Has anyone else had issues like this? Is there a way I can bypass the system so I can at least drive it to the shop?

Thanks!

If it is an after market system, there should be a button some where hidden that you can use to turn it off, by pushing it a certain way. you will need to know the make of the system though. My truck had this and there was a button under the dash I had to push once the key was turned on to start the truck. If you bought private party, call the PO and see if he has the remote. BUt you best bet would be taking to an audio/alarm install place instead of a mechanic shop. those guys specialize in that crap and know all the tricks and have all the special tool to over ride that stuff.

Look in the Fuse panel on the dash and see if there is a random button their, if so try turning on the ignition and holding down the button, or just pressing the button with the ignition on.

Does it have an indicator light, is it just an LED or is it have a little box if it has a little box look for a button on it again try to press it with ignition on.

If neither of these spots check out look under dash and any areas within reach of the driver for a little random button, as long as the installer or previous owner did not mess with the code for the alarm it should shut the alarm off with a single press or hold of the button while ignition is on.

I had one of those on my truck from the previous owner. I set it off and it cut power to my starter so I couldn't drive until I figured it out. There was a little black box secured to my steering column under the knee bolster. Removed it in a minute and was able to start the truck like nothing had happened. Haven't had a problem with it since.

open the hood and find the alarm siren, that should have a brand name on there. It would be easier to help you disable it if we know what brand it is.

Thanks for the replies!

As far as I can tell, the security system on the truck came stock. There is no aftermarket button/box/siren that I can find. The alarm itself is the headlights flashing and horn sounding in time with the flashing light. According to the owner's manual, to stop the alarm lock/unlock the doors or let the alarm time out in 3 minutes. I've tried both, but nothing has worked so far.

I purchased the truck from a small Auto Sales place, but he doesn't have the remote key.

Unfortunately its looking like I'm going to have to have it towed to the shop to see if they can fix whatever is wrong with it..

UPDATE:

I called the guy I bought it from, and he had it towed back to his buddies at a Dodge dealership. First they replaced the central timing unit, and that solved the car alarm but the engine still wouldn't start. Turns out one of the many computers went bad, so he's replacing it for me free of charge. (I think he's only going to get me to cover the towing).

I should find out more specifics soon!
