The best option is to have it towed to a junkyard with a dodge ram with the same engine. I was quoted once for 750 for a new engine swap. That is your best bet, and the cheapest.

also, do not try to get a 5.9 engine in there. the PCM (computer) will be completely different.

GOOD NEWS:
Many 1996 5.2s are junked because of blown transmissions. So the engines are really good. I had 3 different trucks for me to choose from in Lawton OK.

Steps:
1. look up a junkyard in amarillo.
2. Call them and tell them you need an engine swap for your vehicle.
3. They will probably have one. if not, they will call around to get one.
4. They will warranty the part, but you can only bring it to THEM to get it fixed.

You are in luck with that engine. Because 5.2L magnum engines are in same year Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Durangos. ALL you need is a 5.2L magnum engine. So any junkyard in amarillo will have them.

I did a search, and no junkyards were in amarillo (or at least none that list their entire inventory online).

If you are thinking of getting it transported home there is a website I have used to have stuff hauled called uship its a reverse ebay for shipping
post on there you need the truck transported ASAP and see what someone will charge you just an idea

I wish I could help, I don't know a good shop in Amarillo. Might scout the yellow pages and call around. Look for places that do more than "Lube & Tune."

I agree with Vaughan, head gasket is the most likely culprit with the symptoms you described.

A faint ring of coolant on the top of the oil dipstick, milky colored oil, or a sweet smell in the exhaust fumes are the tell tale signs.

 

head gasket or cracked head like dhvaughan said.

And def. check if the oil looks milky, thats the ost obvious sign of a bad head gasket or head.....Also the intake gaskets could be leaking in the back driver corner. Theres a coolant race there.

 

I appreciate all the advice.
Suspect the fuel pump may not have been the original problem, although the garage said they would check codes and pressure test. Don't know if they did.

Transmission rebuilt and still strong.
Checking for junk yards and shops in Amarillo this am.
Also will get a quote from uship and rental car. Looks like the best option.

Last resort I'll drive up and dolly it back.
