If i keep it below 4000 between shifts it is not an issue but as soon as it hits 4000 rpm, only in second, it is like it hits neutral, RPM flies up then as soon as I let off the pedal it shifts fine into third and I am good to go. Any ideas what this would be? Thanks in advance.
Adjust the second gear band.

Every now and then when i go from park to drive it will hammer shift into drive, almost jerk the **** out of you but it doesnt always do it and most of the time it does it im on an unlevel incline with the front of the truck pointing down the slope.

I know all trans do it to a certain extent but it shouldnt give you whiplash.

Iv changed the fluid and filter also, but im going to be changing the filter again soon because when i changed it the time awhile back it was full of sludge and i doubt the PO ever changed it regularly so im going to change it again and see if it just had so much crap in the torque converter that it just filled the filter up again.

Im also thinking it might have something to do with my spiking RPM's when i first start the truck, when i turn the truck on it will hit around a grand and stay there untill i put it into drive then once it levels out it will sit at around 700 rpms and hold steady.

Sorry for the book but i just want to cover all the bases and let you know what i'v already done
Yes high idle has a big effect on garage shifting (going from park or neutral to a gear). The transmission is designed and engineered to absorb the shock when shifted from ~700rpm. What youre doing when you shift to drive is bringing on the forward clutch, which is stopping the impeller inside the torque converter. That impeller is spinning with the motor and is turning the forward clutch drum. When you shift to drive you suddenly stop the forward clutch which brings the impeller to a quick halt.

So the faster you spin the forward drum the harder it will shock the drive line when applied. Being on an incline doesnt help, it will preload the drive line setting it up for abrasive shock when you take it out of park.

I did not have time or a place to change it as I was moving. Sometimes the light would not come on when I started the truck and have not had any problems with the truck. About a week ago the truck would not shift to over drive unless I let off the fuel pedal that was Monday. I noticed the transmission would shift when the engine got warm, by Friday it will shift the first two gears and nothing else. I changed the filter and fluid but no help. Question can the crankshaft position sensor cause this problem? Is this in limp mode? What else could it be? Any help would be helpful this is the only vehicle we have and my wife commutes fifthteen miles each way and bus is a long trip.

Thank you

What did the fluid look like and smell like? No that is not limp mode, limp mode is 3rd gear only. I have not heard of a CPS causing a problem like this but you never know. Ive had a bad starter on a chevy cause the transmission to go into limp mode. You need to fix the other problems before you can diagnose the transmission, there are a lot of interrelated systems on that truck.

Default 1999 dodge cummins 2500 tranny problem

Fluied looked good did not smell burned deep red there was dome gray sludge attached to the magnet but that was it. The cps is not always an active code.I'm thinking of replacing that and the GP solonoid

Point taken. All threads merged.

Just a quick question, where can I find the GM solenoid for our transmissions? I have read several of the threads that have been posted but have yet to see a part # or source to get it from. Thanks for your time.

Here you go: http://www.transmissioncenter.net/dodge.htm
It's a pretty bulky site so you'll have to scroll down about half way before you actually find it. These guys also have a store on ebay so you can check there as well. Hope you don't mind me answering this easy question MonteC...One less for you to answer.
