As little as possible. lol. I dont take a numerical measurement on these transmissions. I have what is called an h-gauge, and i can see the difference and i just find a washer that fits the best.

Where should I start? I got a $1500 rebuild quote today and that included a RV torque convertor and a shift kit. If you dont think this is a major problem, and I could fix it, then I will. I just figured I would get the worst case scenario. I have taken the vb out before to do the 2nd gear band anchor reinstall, so I can do a little bit. Would any of the above possible problems send red flags to a tranny diagnostic scanner?

Thanks

I am new to this forum. I found it because I was having problems with my 46RE shifting out of first when it got warm. It shifted just fine when it was cold. After reading this thread from start to finish, I started with the speed control sensor. That fixed the warm shifts, then the sporadic 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 shifting points I found that the TV cable was hanging up a little. I fixed that and I think that I now have it fixed. This thread has now saved me alot of money because I was able to get this done myself, and not at a shop. Thanks to everyone on here and especially to MonteC for taking his time to help out all of us.

I would start by pulling the pan down and doing a fluid and filter change, look at the fluid, smell it and look at the bottom of the pan. Adjust the bands. Clean off the governor pressure solenoid, then adjust the cable. And see what that nets you.

No check engine lights right?

Hey Monte, I'm almost at the finish line with my rebuild but I have another question. I there a special tool to adjust the bands? Do I need a crows foot to put on my torque wrench?

MonteC

my tranny took on water tonight when mudding...had to drive 12 miles home with the fluid looking like chocolate milk...

it wont come out of first, slips when going uphill, but it still goes into reverse and drive, just first gear...Is it in limp mode?

i have 25K on the rebuilt tranny....so what im asking is, do you think my tranny is blown? or can i get a flush done, and filter change, and it possibly be ok?

tranny never overheated either....i was VERY easy on it comming home...I didnt let the RPMS go past 2K

thanks...

Limp mode is third only, not first.

Correct, no CEL at all. I just adjusted the bands/changed fluid and filter about 4k miles ago. There was only a little sludge in the bottom of the pan and slight shavings...no chunks. Should I try doing that all again? Im not positive how to adjust the TV cable either, and I have searched and not understood fully. Is there a really good write up on adjusting that? I was thinking about taking it to a tranny shop and having them hook up a scanner to read tranny codes...is this a bad idea?
