MonteC's Transmission Corner (For Info Only)

In a couple of posts the term "TPS" has been used when talking about transmission shifting issues. I don't want to assume what this acronym means so, does TPS mean Throttle Position Sensor or is it something else?
Having the trans in my 99 1500 5.9 truck not shifting 1 - 2 unless I play with the throttle. Only happens when the truck is hot ie running more than 1/2 hour. It happened once out on the track when I was pushing a sprinter off. Had the "Oh xxxx" feeling. Removing the cooler line check valve later today anyway.
Don't push snow just sprint cars with this truck, Thanks, sprntpushr

Hey MonteC, I just had a quick question, and sorry if you have answered it before. I did a search of the thread and couldn't find anything. I have a 2001 dodge ram, and its an automatic transmission. I had my transmission rebuilt a few months ago, and every thing has been find except one minor thing. When just starting the truck and putting in to reverse or drive I give it some gas, and it seems like the clutch is half way in. I can leave it be and it "grabs" or just throw in to park, then back in to drive and its fine. Any insight?
Thanks!
Edit: This only happens when I first start the truck after its been sitting for a 4-5 hours +.

THANK YOU MONTEC!!!!!!!
my problem was the hesitation to 3rd gear (i took on water remember) Well i talked to my old boss, and he has a RAM as well, we swapped out TPS' with each others, and with his TPS my tranny shifts perfect....so my TPS is the culprit now, ive got about 70 miles on the flush, and i still dont see any signs of water contamination.
So all i got to do is get a new TPS....thank god.
even with my TPS, the hesitation is starting to go away, it shifts to 3rd gear at 2200 rpms, when going easy, usually its like 1800-2000 rpms....but only the best for my truck, so new parts it is....
im going to do another flush just to be safe, should i put in a trans-go shift kit, or the sure cure? if any at all? whats the benifits?
ive overheated my tranny, taken on water, and basically beat on it when off-roading, and it was shifting perfect still (with the TPS from my boss' truck)....i guess this guy really did beef it up, and not just do a normal rebuild....PO showed me recipt of rebuild (2400 and change), and he said he had it built for towing....maybe this is why shes still ok.

I was hoping you might be able to guide me in the right direction.
I have a 1994 dodge ram 4x4 1500 with the 360 cid motor.
Truck as 253,000 miles I dont know wether the motor and trans are stock or not. The motor runs good with plenty of power and the trans fluid is in great shape and does not runn about 210 at any given point ( i have a temp gauge in the outlet of the trans line)
The problem i am having is going from 3rd to OD it is a delayed shift goes up to about 3k before shifting. all the other gears are fine. and if you let off the throttle it will shift to OD as soon as you do that.
any ideas?

Well being a 94 the governor is mechanical. You may have a lazy o/d solenoid or a faulty ground.
Or maybe a sticky valve causing the governor pressure to override o/d engagement.

All of them, EXCEPT SMARTBLEND.

Truck not shifting?
Hey, I'm new to the forum and I've been searching through it trying to find a solution to my problem but so far i'm still out of luck. I recently bought a 98 ram knowing it had transmission problems. The guy bought a brand new transmission and put it in himself so I'm sure that has something to do with it. But it rarely shifts into 2nd, when it does I have to manually do it myself. Its shifts into 2nd when its cold but as it warms up it doesn't wanna shift at all and slips out of gear. I've adjusted the tv cable multiple times and it helped it get into 2nd but it still won't do anything else. Any suggestions?

I have a 94 and it shifts fine and goes thru all gears but it feels sluggish i mean it just slips into the next gear not really crisp clean shifts.
What can i do to improve the shifting.
Fluid and filter were recxently changed.

Hey Monte, well I've driven it for 112 miles since the rebuild, and now I don't have overdrive. Overdrive won't engage. Before that, everything was flawless. I did buy a remaned O.D. solenoid so I think that's the problem. I never over heated. Am I on the right path?

Hey Montec,
I'm new to the forum and have been browsing heavily. I'm a long time dodge enthusiast, but admittedly I have little knowledge on them. I'm looking at getting an 01 1500 , and I posted a seperate thread asking for advice on what to look out for if I happen to go look at it/test drive it.
What I would like to ask is, I know it's probably a lot to ask, but can someone explain the tranny issues that people keep mentioning. I don't mean in depth, I don't want to keep you here all night, but in general. Like I said I'm thinking about going to take this one for a spin, and I know the basics, but with the tranny problem in particular, what questions do I ask the owner, what do I look for on the service records if I can get ahold of any, what do I look out for when test driving? Also, I know it probably sounds like a stupid question, but will I usually notice if the tranny's going to give up on me? Say I test drive it and notice no shifting difficulties, good fluid, whatever else, can I say it's safe until I see certain signs or is it one of those things that might or might not go out one day at random?
Everything I've read and everyone that's talked to me on my other post has said to just expect I'll need a rebuild sooner or later, so I understand that much.. but I don't want to go from a decent car that I have little worry with from day to day, to something I'll have to constantly keep my eye on. I want to baby it, but I'm not looking at big hospital bills if you know what I mean! haha. Just some tranny wisdom would be helpful. I've been trying to do some reading on my own, but I can't find the information I need in one place.
