MonteC's Transmission Corner (For Info Only)
i have a 99 ram 5.2 w/ 46re first trans cooked second melted and grenaded due to long run down highway with clogged check ball now on trans 3 and have a temp gague to avoid that mess again and iv added coolers and running without a check ball but the concern i have is low line psi im running arround 35 psi and i think i should be arround 55-60 in drive (because when i first serviced the trans i diddnt know there was no flow thru the cooler in park and almost had a stroke) any thaughts it is a junk yard trans and iv dropped the pan with filter once and flushed with new filter twice and it definately used to have more pep now kinda a slug
Hi Robert, thanks for all the help you offer here.......very generous and I know many people are grateful.
I have a 2001 ram 2500 diesel with 120k miles and 47re tranny.
First gear is the issue. After adjusting bands myself (which I have always done) as part of reg. service, I'm still having the following problem, which started about 200 miles ago, and it's slowly getting worse.
After the truck coasts to a near standstill and needs to get back into first gear when I give her gas, very often she will be out of gear and will just rev when I give her gas again. Sometimes when the revs settle, she'll go into gear, other times I can place the truck in Park and back in Drive and that will solve the problem. It's becoming a very regular occurrence and I think I'm in trouble---$$$$$$! The only thing weird to add to this is that when I adjusted the front band, the torx-40 screw needed to be turned more than the usual 1 half to 1 turn to hit the 72 inch-pound spec. I backed it off 1 7/8 turn but the adjusting screw is now in enough that it's flush with the lock nut......in other words, I think my front band might be worn out? But I am no expert.
With family vacation scheduled for Saturday, a cheap DIY fix (readjust front band, or check a solenoid etc.,......I'm living on dreams here!) would be very welcome news! Any hope for such a thing? Also, can I trust this truck for another thousand miles RT to our vacations spot or is it possible (your guess is welcome) that we could end up with a roadside break down? Again, it's only first gear that seems to be the problem and I can deal with this when we get back if I need to-----or postpone our trip.
Thanks again.

You just have to cut the old band out and it will slip around the drum and come out. The new band is modified to slide around the drum while the trans is still in the truck. You will need to remove the valvebody to install this band.

Hey Monte, I got a quick one for you. I'm running a stock dodge trans cooler and I'm also running it threw the rad. My temp when hot and idling is 160 but when I'm driving it's 140. My temp gauge is on the hot side. Does this sound about right?
47re's are bad about loosing the 2nd gear band. Its a bad band design from the factory. You might be able to get it by for a while if you put a slip in band in.

Hi MonteC,
Thanks for the helpful response. I think you have identified the problem and I checked out Wittrans.com and the specific product you suggest. Leads me to a few questions........thanks in advance for being patient. Here are the questions:
Can you recommend a thread or link somewhere that might walk me through this process? OR, to your knowledge, does this slip on band come with instructions? If so, do you personally know if they are well written and accurate? Also, I assume the band in question is the FRONT kick down band, right? And that this band is fairly visible and easy to get to after valve body removal?
My concerns based on what you have described is that cutting the band off sounds like it could take specialized tools or cutters plus a lot of strength and patience! and also, removing and replacing the valve body to get to the band might require new gaskets and torque specs for proper VB reinstall. I'll need to know all of this before I decide to take this on.
I'd be happy to give an account of this procedure including photos at the appropriate place on this forum so that I might help others who might have similar issues.
Anyway, thanks again and I look forward to your response.
