Update on the no-reverse problem: it was the "direct clutch pack snap ring" (aka snap ring OD direct clutch wave). I finished up this evening around 9:30 and everything works!

A $6 snap ring and eight hours work is a heck of a lot better than $2500 for a complete rebuild.

I don't have a scan tool available but I was able to do some diagnosis with a voltmeter. I have ruled out the temp, pcm, and wiring. So now I guess there are only a few options left of what it could be. Bad solenoid, stuck valve body or bad overdrive unit. Does this sound correct.
Thanks for the help.

Ok MonteC did some searching and cant find a answer to my problem.

My truck takes off in 2nd gear instead of first, I know many people have had this problem but when I put it manually into 1st it doesnt change into first.

Me and my dad sat in the driveway going through all gears and got it to shift into first a couple times by going from park all the way to first, so I took it for a spin and was able to get it to go into first by going from park to 1st and immediately getting on the gas if I waited anymore than 2 seconds it would already be in second.

Thanks for the help in advance

To me it sounds like a messed up governor solenoid or problem with the VB

If your having a problem with early lock up then you need a scan tool to see when the computer is commanding the TCC.

Posting your email address on a public forum is really not a good plan. Well, unless you actually ENJOY getting spammed to death......

Transmissions should be the same. Assuming both are 4X4's.

I have an easy question, but I'd like an expert opinion on it. I have a 1998 dodge ram, 46re trans. It was rebuilt about 10k miles ago (truck has 142k now). Trans shifts fine, but seems to take a lot of effort/throttle to get it to kick down out of overdrive. I adjusted tv cable to factory setting (cable end centered on stud on throttle lever). This helped some. I've heard you can adjust slightly to get later shifts. I think you slide the cable sheath towards the cab, err maybe its the other way, not sure. will have to look into that further. My main concern and question is, will a slight adjustment for firmer shifts/higher line pressure be bad for or cause premature wear on the transmission? It would seem that the increased line pressure might actually be good for clutches, bands, etc in the trans. Thanks.
