Have a 94, 2WD, 318 just plain jane, not sure the tranny number. I bought the truck real cheap to get stuff for the house with. I was driving on the highway when i noticed that i was running too high of RPMS for the speed i was going, not redlining just higher than normal. Shifted into neutral then back to drive, and everything was fine. Next day same thing happened tried to shift and it did nothing stayed stuck in 2nd gear. Long story short was driving it on a quick errand and now the thing wont come out of 1st. I changed the filter/fluid and it appeared to be ok, not burnt or any strange color. The guy i bought it from had replaced the the TPS, and i get the feeling he wasnt a mechanical genius after i changed the plugs and they werent gapped at all. The truck is also stalling when i put it into reverse, and now when i try to drive in gear. Could the TPS be the cause of all my troubles or is there something deeper? I took it to my mechanic and he was overwhelmed and just said to replace the tranny, but i've had no slips/grinds or anything and i dont think the whole tranny needs replaced. Thanks for any help possible.
If its a 94 then it has a hydraulic governor. The tps has nothing to do with shifting 123. The tps only has a role in 4th gear and lock up.
If the trans is not up shifting properly you could have a sticky governor, bad valve body, or mis adjusted tv cable.

Might adjust the cable and try a bottle of red smart blend.

Could be the front seal, pump oring, pump bolts or the vent. In a rare case the converter it self could be leaking.

I have only put 3000 miles on this rebuilt trans and yesterday had to fight to get it out of 2nd into drive just to make it home. this morning ran down to the store before working on it and now it refuses to shift outta first and when i seems like it shifted into second it just revs. blew code p1756 but i think that was from high revs in 1st gear. please help if you can!
Take it back to the shop. Something is not right.

Depends on what motor is in the van.

my tranny went. i bought a rebuilt one with 10k miles on it from a 98 1500 4x4. everything shifts smoothly but over drive. it doesnt go in. from what ive researched today there are 2 types of torque converters. locking and non locking. locking has 23 splines and non locking has 24 splines. could this be the problem or am i looking at something easier as a simple solenoid?
