adjust your second gear band and see if that helps the slipping. If not then the band may be on its way out the door.

what do you mean by adjusting the band? I have no idea about transmissions. My buddy told me to put some stop slip in it. Could i do that or just take the tranny and have it rebuilt. Ill take you guys advice on this before my buddies

Dont put "stop slip" in it, you will regret that. Does it slip on take off or when you mash the gas to pass someone? I assumed it is slipping when the transmission is kicking down.

If your cruising about 45 and you put the pedal to the metal does the transmission slip and neutralize?

Its garbage. It swells all of the seals inside the transmission and then once its been in long enough it starts to break down into a brown sludge. Fun stuff to clean out when you are rebuilding a transmission. The stuff doesnt even fix anything.

You need to adjust your second gear band, there is an adjuster nut on the out side of the case. Do a search for band adjustment, i think a few guys have a DIY on the subject.

Before you go to adjust the band, buy a HAYNES manual for your truck and an in/lb torque wrench.

You can spend a day just reading the scheduled maintenance section (chapter 1) of the manual. I also have the Chilton's manual, because that one has better wiring diagrams.

Haynes for troubleshooting and dirtywork
Chilton for wiring

OR you can take it to the dealership and tell them that you want a drain and fill tranny service that includes band adjustment. I was quoted at 139.99.

paint a line on the exterior forward band (see diagram in haynes) and look at that when you get it back. If they have not touched it, then you know they did not adjust the bands.

I guess it all depends where you live. I was quoted $230 over here in Nor Cal.

I've had my 98 since new. Talked to the dealer about adjusting the bands and letting them change fluid and filter at 30k miles and they looked at me like I was crazy. Said they never adjusted bands unless it wasn't shifting right. Same story when I talked to the dealer in the next closest city. I changed it myself, didn't adjust bands, ever. Changed it every 30k, had to have trans rebuilt at 130k. Has 140k now. I wonder if adjusting the bands would have prolonged trans life any? Sorry, kinda rambled and hijacked the thread...
