best you can do is do it yourself....thats my honest opinion. attempt the rebuild yourself....cant really do any harm if its already blown...

but a good rebuild will cost around 1800-2200 bucks. DONT GO TO AAMCO

Where did you get your info on this?
When did 96.5 start? According to my build sheet my 1996 ram was built on October 31, 1995 and has the 46re transmission.
This was verified when I replaced transmission last November, the governor is electronically controlled.

I don't believe the whole 1996 and 1996.5 thing, personally. I have yet to see any 1996 Rams or Dakotas with a 46RH.

Speaking of DIY rebuilds, anyone have a good kit to recommend? I'm not looking to do anything special, just get it working right again. As always, the cheaper the better.

a 46re is the same thing, but with an o/d unit bolted to the back. If you can work on a 727 you can work on a 46re.

i see that now that i got into it the valve body is different but like u say its the same however i took it apart today hmmmmmmmm?? what a mess found lots of aluminum so im sure just by me saying that you know pretty much what went on. I had to pry the first planitery gear off the shaft a bearing went out of one of the sun gears i guess you would call it the gear inside the planitery it would have locked up and spun on the shaft creating a huge mess. so correct me if im wrong but now i need to have a new cooler put in my radiator cuz that should be plugged up flush my lines and ill probly never get it all out of the tranny. so i can get a used tranny (which i plan to rebuild out of the gate) and a radiator for 750 i think this is my best bet?????

You could by pass the rad trans cooler and install a separate cooler so as not to by a new rad. Why wouldn't you be able to buy a new planetary gear and rebuild your trans? My O.D. planetary gear got chewed to bits. I just replaced the parts that were bad.
