Other than contacting dodge, how do I tell? The sticker in the glove box just say it's a 4 speed auto. It's an 01 1500 with the 5.2L V8, 2 wheel drive.

Alot of information about your vehicle can be obtained from build sheet.
Call parts dept at Dodge dealer give them your vin number and they can print it off for you free.

I have a 98 with the 5.9 is it the same transmission and i am taking this truck apart to rebuild the trans, is it true a shift kit will stop it from burning up all the time and if so where should i shop for a shift kit and rebuild kit.

All V8s have the 46RH/RE tranny. 1995 was the last year of the RH trannies, every one since has been a RE.

No that is false. A good rebuild will make the trans not burn up all the time. A shift kit will help improve shift feel and give it more durability. But there is no shift kit in the world that can fix a bad rebuild.

When did 96.5 start? According to my build sheet my 1996 ram was built on October 31, 1995 and has the 46re transmission.
This was verified when I replaced transmission last November, the governor is electronically controlled.
