Default 1999 Dodge Ram 5.2L V8 throwing PO308 code repeatedly!

Hello,

I have a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2L V8. I love my truck dearly, and it has 186k on it. Runs absolutley wonderful but lately at idle it has a very slight rough idle. Hardly noticable, but I can notice it, very picky about my truck..

Now.....for the last few months every now and again it will throw the PO308 code, cylinder 8 misfire. I have the code memorized by now! after a few key cycles it shuts off....later on down the road, back again!

In the past few months I have replaced the spark plugs twice!, (318 does not like bosch, so now I have champion) wires once, and plenum and intake gaskets.

It is really really irritating me, to the point where I am about to pull the freakin bulb cuz the truck is still running great.

If anyone can help me out with this issue that would be great! I live in pennsylvania and was planning on taking the truck to maine this summer, but want to know all is well with the motor.

I've tried searching on here and all problems similar get fixed after the plenum. Well mine is special I guess.

It's thrown the code probably 5 times in the last 6 months. always PO308.

Please help!

run a compression check on all cylinders. see how #8 compares with the others.

if compression is ok, and the truck runs good, consider doing nothing.

if compression is ok and you want to keep tinkering, swap the #8 injector with another cylinder to see if the problem moves.

My money's on the distributor cap and rotor. Cheap part, but a pain to get to.

Hello,
I have a 99' Dodge 1500 4X4, which i have been working on for 2 years currently im close to having it done BUT i'm having trouble with the front axle assembly.. I'm looking for a proper diagram of the front axle...the placing of each seal and bearing in the front axle.

And if there are any other dust sheals to help with the dirt..i need this truck finished properly ..I would appreciate if anyone has any way of helping me out I've gone to many stores but they dont happen to have a full diagram of these things ...

hope someone can help out look forward to reply...on here or threw email

Posting your email address in the clear is just asking for spam..... shouldn't do that.

In the FAQ section here, there is a 2001 factory service manual available for download, grab it. It can tell you everything you need to know. And then some.

to the OP,

Replace cap and rotor.

Clean the contact points on every engine ground you have. Consider adding a few ground straps as well. Bad grounds cause rough idle and weird misfires.

If that doesn't fix it, get the catalytic converter checked for clogging/breakage. A clogged cat can back up exhaust gases usually throwing a P0308 and P0307 code.

Be sure to post up what you discover.

Also to the OP, if you still have the issue that is, try routing your #8 wire over the top of the valve cover so it crosses the others at a 90* angle, like this:

On that compression check, if all is not well, I'm afraid its time you pulled the head and look for cracks along the valve ports...
