Default My Exhaust Plans...will it work?

Hey guys, I have a 1999 5.9L Dodge Ram......so this is the muffler I want in place of the stock muffler.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HO...8HKR/?rtype=10

This muffler should work right? The inlet and outlet should be ok is my biggest question. Also with the dual outlet I can run the 2nd pipe around the spare tire? or do I have to remove the spare due to heat issues? Anyone have some good pictures? Do I need any sort of Y-pipe that everyone talks about?

Also, in front of the muffler I want to install this cat.

It looks like a direct fit and pretty easy install. This should work correct? Also I notice it has the O2 sensor holes, will the computer in the truck relearn after so many miles?

Thanks all for the responses.

Welcome to DF.

That muffler should fit fine, I think.

Be careful with the cat. Starting around 1999 or 2000, Chrysler made a pretty darn well undocumented change in our exhaust systems. They went from a converter like the one described in that link to a y-pipe before the converter (with the O2 sensor in that) and changed the converter to a single inlet/single outlet 3" design (with a reducer afterward to narrow the exhaust to about 2.5").

I'd double check what you have now, get under there and look real close. See if you have the older converter style or the newer one.

Watch how close you get those pipes to the spare, mine has a nice groove melted into it that matches up with the pipe.

your combo ought to work just fine. My sisters 99 5.9l is the 2 in 1 out cat with the o2 sensor in the cat, so yours should be the same. Definitely hop under there and check before you order.

I dont know who routed your pipes so close to your spare but I have had no problems with the spare tire and heat from my pipes, maybe if I'm in a good mood tomarrow I will take some pics of how my exhaust is mounted

The might have been routed when the truck was new and somewhere in the 74k miles before I got it, the previous owners put the 265 75 16 tires on it with that size spare. If it was a 245 75 16 then it would be fine.

This is where the o2 sensor will be in the newer exhaust setup that jasonw was talking about

What did you hit with your tranny pan?...did you weld your exhaust together and are those clamps holding up your pipes?

Here is some pics of mine one day I will pull out the spare and take some better pics, probably when i get a bigger spare and it looks like I will have plenty of room for a bigger spare if not I will go back and get it fixed for free.

My transmission pan has seen the ground up close a few times.

Yes I did weld it, don't pick on my welds. I rarely weld and doing it on your back with the truck on its wheels is a pain. The welds around the rear y pipe are from where I cut the dummy muffler off the other day, I still need to clean it up with a grinder. I had a muffler shell on there so I could pass inspections but I took it off after I put a glass pack on it.

Exhaust clamps make good hangers, what's wrong with that?

Hey not picking on the welds just making sure you didnt pay for that, and I have never seen someone use clamps as hangers and the clamps just didnt look like they were holding anything together.

And sh*t I cant weld that good with everything set up right, but hopefully this summer I get some practice, my dad wants to buy a new welder his stick welder is not enough for him

What did you need the dummy muffler for?? emissions

Yep, emissions.
They told me that I have to have a muffler on it, but they didn't say it had to be functional. So I sliced a scrap muffler in half with a sawzall and gutted it, then welded it over the y pipe.

I check I have the old style CAT right off the headers, and that muffler will fit. However the rear end and suspension setup looks a little different than the pictures. I do have a posi rear end and tow package. Was there a difference?
