Default Overhead Console Compatibility

My truck info is in my sig. My overhead console quit working one day and have been looking for a replacement for a while. I have the opportunity to buy one out of a 1997 1500. Is this unit compatible?

I believe the overhead display changed over in 1998, is this correct?

I am pretty sure you will be fine, according to what I have read the console changed in 99 not 98 and it included the mpg, but I could be wrong, someone with more knowledge please jump in.

I have a 98 ram that doesn't have any digital display. I am planning to attempt putting one in this week but have a choice of one from a 97 without mpg and one from a 2000 with mpg. I am pretty sure mine doesn't support mpg. But I would think you should be fine with one out of a 97.

My '99 does have the mpg on it, kinda thinking that did start in the 98 models but not completely sure.

I just got the overhead console at the salvage yard the other day, haven't had time to put it in yet but plan to make time this week. I got the one for my year truck, temp and compass, I also picked up the auto dim mirror and temp sensor. Paid $35 for all of it.
I read the other write ups from this site but those mostly deal with 99 and newer with MPG and trip. Still need to do more research on wirring. The one at junk yard had missing plug and all wires were cut below dash.

94-98 is all the same. 99 Is different. 2000-2001 is also different.

i did a search but only found a diy in the dakota forums. it actually looked pretty easy for their trucks, looked like they were already prewired
