I dont believe there was any factory trans temp sensor. If there was, it would be available for you to monitor, either throw a PID from OBDII or directly tapped onto the sensor.

Probably. There's a sensor in the valve body I believe. That's how the PCM knows to turn on the trans temp light and to kick out of OD when it gets too hot. So you could probably monitor it through your main diag port if you had a tool that would look for that specfic value. Might talk to MonteC about this.

Dieselmanor made this so you don't have to tap into the line:
http://www.dieselmanor.com/dm_products/DM-TRS.asp
It is like putting a thermometer ON the actual line itself. They say it reads 5 degrees cooler at 200 degrees.

I would go this route (actually i HAVE!!!):
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DER-14210/

It is a deep pan that has cooling tubes AND a bung for a temp sensor. Just get the cheapest sensor you can find and install. THat way you hit on more areas:
Temp monitoring
no cutting or splicing (unless you are running a backlight gauge)
extra fluid capacity (lower temps and longer fluid life)

can't say that i like the idea of a temp sensor on the deep pan. i'd rather tap the line to the radiator that way i know for sure i'm not getting a different temp then what it actually is.

someone posted about putting a temp sensor in one of the pressure test ports, and then running a wire and a gauge.

heres something i found today on MSD Ignition website, they have a "DashHawk" which connects to your ODBII port and "monitors over 100 parameters" now granted they don't disclose what those "over 100 parameters" are, i sent them an email and would like to know exactly what it will monitor, for $299 it should take my truck to the car wash and atleast wash it! but i'll keep ya posted on what it does if some of you are interested.
