I'd want to use a rebuilt trans instead of one with a bunch of miles on it and very few include a bell housing with them. I think the 360 takes a different flywheel since it's externally balance. Am I correct?
Yes to the hydraulics, pedals, shifter, shifter boot, trim, and wiring harness. But the nv3500 has an integrated bellhousing, not a removable one and a 318 PCM wouldn't run a 360 to its capabilities.

Yes, the 360 takes a weighted flywheel.

I didn't realize the 360 and 318 had different PCMs. I know there are different PCMs for auto vs manual trannies though. Does the 318 have al the same sensors, injectorsn fireing order, timing, and even throttle body? What difference would a 318's PCM on a 360 make? Not saying you're wrong, just trying to learn as much as I can.

I've tried looking for the 3/4 ton/4500 combos but there aren't many around here. They seem to be slim pickins compared to the 1/2 ton/3500 combos.

Ah, didn't know the 3500 had a non-removable bellhousing.

I know chevy ran the 3500, but did they too put 4500's in the 3/4 tons?

The PCM differences are mainly in the fuel maps and possibly the timing tables as well. The 318 PCM will run the 360, but it will likely starve the engine and you won't get the power output the engine should have.

FWIW, I have a '95 Ram 5.9L mopar performance PCM (for an automatic) running my '95 Dakota 5.2L v8 5 speed.

That's what a SCT Tuner is for. wonder if the dealer could reflash it for the 360. Sounds like the difference is in the programming, not the hardware.
