motor swap 94 5.2 to 98 5.2

Question motor swap 94 5.2 to 98 5.2

i lost a cam bering in my 94 5.2 ram. i purchased a complete rebuilt 98 5.2 this afternoon i have mine pulled out i have noticed a differences in the engines first is the 94 has egr and the 98 does not do i have to use my intake or will it work with the intake that is on the 98 also is there any think else i have to do before i reinstall the engine

your 94 is OBD I and the 98 is OBD II, so if any sensors are different, use the one's from the 94.

you could move the intake from the 94 to the 98 and keep the EGR,
or you could use the 98, and eliminate the EGR. i don't think your pcm will complain, but i don't know, so get another opinion.

also double check the number of temp sensors in the front of the intake, 1 vs 2.

edit - if the PLENUM on the 98 hasn't been fixed, you'll want to do that. it would be easier to do before you install it.

How much did that engine cost? (sorry, im wanting to do something similar with my dodge).

Wow. I thought a rebuilt engine would cost a lot more.

Makes me feel better about the idea of getting one now. I thought it would be like, 5000 dollars.

Nothing against the 5.2, but the older the little 318 is, the better it is. From past experience, if the 5.2 is newer than 97, then it isn't near the motor as one older than 97. That isn't a bad buy, but there are many of 5.2/5.9's on craigslist for 300-350 dollars. If that 5.2 is in really good shape, then that is amazing Good luck on the engine swap and I hope you get everything done with no problems!

And how is this true? Im gonna go ahead and say this is BS. Cause there the same except some sensors and crap like that..

300-350 is for a used non rebuilt price. But all a rebuild entails is gaskets and seals being replaced. maybe, if you are lucky, a .030 over and/or honing.

800 seems pretty good.

I go from experience. Its all what you are looking for. The most durable made 318's are from the good old days. They were just built strong. Now, if you want a race engine, and you had to pick between a 1995 and 2000 5.2, then the 95 318 would win. If the trucks had the same specs (2wd and 4wd) then this is usually true. My 96 318 beats my friends 98 ram sport with the 360, but his is 4wd with more horsepower. He raced another 98 ram sport, but it was a 318. They were both four-wheel-drives too. He straight up stomped that lil 318. If I race another 318, and it's newer, the outcome is the same. I don't really know why mine beats them, and most of the ones that I race are two wheel drive too.

No seriously, there basically the same engines. Only different sensors and crap bolted to them. And also, you gotta take into acount, gearing, wear and tear,weight of the other truck, and are they the same trucks with the same options? As in more weight... Its all in how somthing is set up and how somthing was taken care of. Im not saying your full of crap. But what your saying is alittle off..That the newer 318's are slower... And not as good as the older. It almost makes me wanna laugh.

EDIT:So Your saying that if i put a 2001 Dodge ram 5.2 1500 2wd Short Bed Regular Cab against a 95 Dodge ram 5.2 1500 2wd Short bed regular cab with the same options, gearing and setup and weight. That the 95 will stomp the 01? Now who else thinks this is true?




To the original poster: As said above, that engine will work. And will be just as good as your old one, you just need to bolt some of your old accessories/sensors to the new one. And it'll work and have just as much power as before.
