Default Thinking about rebuilding your tranny? Come in and take a look!

While doing research for my rebuild, I noticed that there was a lack of information (with exception to MonteC's wealth of knowledge and Gobbell's thread about his rebuild) about how to rebuild it step by step. I spent a good while looking for people who journaled it step by step and came across some that really helped me out tremendously. Here are the links. Now you be the judge.

(This is Gobbell's website. GREAT PICS TO REFERENCE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BUILD)
http://my.att.net/p/s/community.dll?...pid=404015&ck=

(The 46re's can skip the governor section in this build)

(This rebuild is for a 47rh but it's generally the same thing)
http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/d...s-t160276.html

(This one, by far, is my favorite in terms of detail)
http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f13/4...torial-911009/

Here's the ATSG manual. This is were I got it from. Gobbell's has the video on his site.
http://www.scribd.com/doc/228727/Dod...Service-Manual

And the FSM is in the DIY section. Larramie posted it.

As far as parts, I got my hard parts and solenoids from
https://www.wittrans.com/Schematic.a...sion=A518/A618

My rebuild kit from Ebay.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Delux...#ht_1619wt_939

And lastely, my torque converter from Precision of New Hampton. I got a stock low stall converter for $165 (it only took 3 days from ordering it to receiving it) but they offer performance one's for more. The sky's the limit. MonteC highly recommended this company and I thank him for that because it's pretty awesome.

I also bought the sonnax sure cure kit about 7 months ago from the parts for sale section in the DF for only $80 (I couldn't pass that up) but never got to install it until now.

The rebuild is not as hard as you think. Just like in life, when rebuilding your tranny, you HAVE TO pay attention to detail, stay within specs and keep a clean station.

And if you ever have any question, don't be afraid to ask. Just like HeyYou told me, "the only stupid question is the one that's not asked". Good luck fellas.

Excellent Idea there. The information you provided me was invaluable. I have never done an automagic before.... but, armed (to the teeth) with this info, this is getting added to the "to do" list for my truck.

In addition, a 'suggested' parts list from MonteC's trans thread. This was a list of parts for a member that regularly towed a 7000 pound trailer. I have added part descriptions, and current costs from Wittrans.com. Hope this helps.

Exact same. I think there might be some variances in the valve body, but that's it.
BTW, for those who don't know, this was the first tranny I ever rebuilt...to be blunt, this is the first type of tranny work whatsoever I've done. Before that, trannies (both transvestites and transmission) scared the crap out of me. Now only one of them does (Transvestites).

Good on you. That's the problem with people today -- they're too intimidated to trying something different and "getting their hands dirty". Hell, my engine rebuild was the first for me (at age 37) and I thought it was cake.

What do you figure it will cost you in parts and supplies (specialty tools, cleaners, machine shop, etc) for the rebuild?

If your talking only soft parts, no upgrades, then about $400 (including torque converter). I spent about $50 in tools I didn't have. I lacked a shop press to compress the "monster spring" in the O.D. unit so I improvised and used 2 HUGE 8" C-clamps which worked just as well (I returned those yesterday to the home depot and got my $35 back). It cost me about $700 because my O.D unit was shot. Completely black and burnt to hell. I also upgraded my 3 disc direct drum clutch to a 4disc clutch. I kept my mods minimal in case my rebuild didn't go right. I'm gonna upgrade my front and rear servo's now since I know my rebuild went well. I can do those without removing my tranny. I also got a trans temp gauge and oil temp gauge from ebay last week for only $44 for both.

IMO, a thread about this specific of an issue (especially when we already have MonteC's corner) should not be stickied.

Added to the FAQ, however, probably.

EDIT: There, put into the FAQ section.
