Default Help! Engine F*** Up

I have a problem with my 1999. It wont start when its cold. What I mean is that it will start then the RPMs drop to zero and it cuts off if I dont keep giving it gas. I have to sit there giving it gas until the engine is at running tempature, it will not cut off but it will idle ruff and the rpms rise and lower. The ambient temperature is around 90 degrees outside.

Did you have a dead battery recently? Same thing happened to my truck when my battery died and I had to drive it around for about an hour or so until the computer could reset it self.

It could be the battery going bad on you.. Mine likes to do that as well. If you test the battery and it's good, then pull the TB off the truck and clean the IAC motor and the TPS and see what happens then.

It starts now but yes it was dying a while back. when I had a coolant leak that was being splattered by the fan and shorting out my alternator.

If you mean by "short" that the coolant was getting on the belt and causing it to slip all over the place and causing the GEN light to come on, then yes. If you mean that you were saturating the alternator in coolant, then that might not be charging as well as it should be and causing your battery to not get charged back up all the way- Making the TPS go nuts.

Still, clean both the TPS and the IAC.

Oh, don't curse on the forum. It's really not needed, man.

The IAC motor, I thought it was just a sensor. When it comes to engines im a noob, so I might need a little more explaining lol.

its on the back of the throttle body (IAC) take out the whole unit and you'll figure it out from there on how to clean it.

Check to see that your coolant temp sensor is plugged in/working correctly. The sensor is located on the front right portion of the manifold, close to the thermostat.

I had my coolant temp sensor come unplugged on my Dakota (v6 magnum) and it could only be started by holding the gas down. When it did start the idle would be very irratic.

Just to help you more...that "racing chip" you have. Unless its a hypertech, superchips, sct, or a tuner that puts a tune on your rams pcm. Its garbage and not doing anything to help your ram. Jet chips, and others like them from ebay or online are a scam.
