HeyYou, the compressor engages just fine, so is it safe to assume that there is refrigerent in there?
If the compressor runs, yep, there is indeed refrigerant in there.

Does the low pressure side get cold and frosty? If so, have a look at the temp door in the ductwork. It simply may not be closing completely, though, the rude noises from the compressor when it is running is most certainly NOT a good sign.

HeyYou, I haven't felt around to see if anything gets cold under the hood, but I think I would notice if anything was cold because there would be a lot of condensed water on the lines. My engine compartment was bone dry.

Looks like my best bet is to replace the compressor. Can it be rebuilt? Can I rebuild it myself? Are there any specail tools to completely remove it from the truck? I've had it unbolted a few times, but I've never tried to remove any of the lines. Thanks again for the help.

i removed my compressor and installed a new one with just a basic set of tools.
it would help to have a haynes manual.
bought the replacement at autozone. also don't forget to add some PAG oil to the new compressor, that is what keeps the internals lubricted.
took it to a shop to recharge because they have better leak detection capabilities and are more environmentally friendly.

I have the same issue the compressor runs for a few seconds then shuts off... the line with the filler gets ice cold but the retrn line is hot...like something is plugged I added 134a and the gauge now goes from too high to in the green as the compressor kicks on and off...

Augie: Problem debris in the orifice tube. When I recharged mine, the pressure on the low side would cycle up and down, until I had sufficient charge, now it stays fairly stable, and the A/C blows fairly cold. (though, not as cold as I think it should be.... probably an evac, and recharge is in my future.)

CSXFan: The compressor is not really rebuildable. Just replace it, and have the system vacuumed down. Might not hurt, while the compressor is off, and the system open, to pull the lines, and clean 'em out, and see what ya find.

Most compressors come prefilled with oil, check to be sure before you add more.
