Default Quick question about changing gear oil....

Gonna change my rear gear oil tomorrow. Going to add the friction additive cause I know I have a LSD but I am also going to use black RTV for the seal.

I had heard that I have to wait 24 hours to let the RTV set before I can refill the differential with new gear oil but the FSM doesn't say anything about that. It just says to install within 5 minutes of setting up the RTV.

Do I have to wait or is that incorrect info? Also the FSM says 30 ft/lbs per bolt, that seems a bit much to me?

i actually just did my diff last month. the only thing different is i had an open diff. as for the gasket you wanna seal with, i used "the right stuff" which is an instant gasket maker. with RTV it has a curing time of 24 hrs right? i believe you have to let it sit before you can put it up to the assembly and start tightening it. the wait time before you start tightening is like 5 mins. and for torquing, i just hand tightened in a criss cross manner. once they were threaded cleanly and in a cross manner, i tightened with a wrench. i didnt use a torque wrench though.

For RTV as gasket replacer, I just run a bead around the gasket surface, let it 'skin over' (5 to 10 minutes, depending on conditions...) and reassemble, add fluid to full. Never had a leak.

skin over is a good description for how long you should wait for you assemble..

So I was planning on using Permatex Ultra Black RTV. I should be good to go after an hour you think?

I wouldn't even bother waiting that long. If you wanna wait about ten, put the cover on, and tighten up the bolts, and then take a coffee break, that works too.

when i changed my rear diff fluid, i put on the rtv, immidiatly put on the cover and torqued....waited 10 minutes, filled it with gear oil, took it for a ride....this was about 6K ago, and ive done alot of off-roading since, and i havent lost a drop, nor is it contaminated.
