Default Ball Joint Fun!!

Hi fellas, a couple of questions for ya:

Working on swapping out bj's on a 97 2500 (D60) and I'm wondering when you have the hub/rotor off if there is a way to tell the bearings are shot? They seem fine, I'm just curious, I'd imagine they'd be loose and there would be play.

Secondly, what are you supposed to torque the 4 flange bolts to and the axle nut? What haapens if you overtighten the axle nut?

So far it's went pretty good thanks to some tips I found on the forum such as using power stering to knock hub off-worked awesome.

Thanks!

if the bearing are shot it wouldnt be free flowing, and yea have play in them. not sure bout the flange bolts but the axle nut is like 250 ft pounds i think. if you overtighten a nut, nothin shouldnt happen honestly cuz i dont think you would be able to get it much tighter than what the spec is designed for.

Should be 180 Ft lbs on the axle hub nut
125 ft lbs on the 4 hub to steering knuckle bolts.

Thanks guys. I got a new problem now....knew it was going too good. Just went to install the knuckle back in the truck and can't tighten the lower nut without the ball joint spinning? Never had this problem before...anyone got any ideas? Nut seems to go on awfully tight....

Was thinking of maybe jacking underneath the lower joint to put some pressure on the stud so it will hold tight?

put the jack under the steering knuckle and this will press the taper in till you get it tight
