Exclamation simple way to check fuel gauge

Can anyone tell me an easy way to access the output of the fuel sending unit? My gauge went from reading a quater tank to going all empty after I gave her a full tank of fuel . This is an 01 ram 1500 with a 5.2. This truck also has a faulty PCM that I'm saving up for. Could it be related? She runs pretty good, I haven't had her very long so I haven't had a chance to figure out her little quirks. And the last Dodge I owned was a old 1974 D100 so I'm a little ignorant right now. If someone could tell me the output of the sender (ohm range) and where an easy acess would be I would really appreciate it.
Next month I'm going to tackle the a/c system and I will post some picks.

Grab the factory service manual out of the FAQ section, it has wiring diagrams and such.

I think that all of the gauges are driven by the PCM? (not 100% on that...) So, you might want to make sure the PCM is good, before going much further.

What led you to the conclusion that your PCM is toast??

Welcome to DF!

I have an old superchip tuner for a diesel my neighbor gave me, and it pulled up a p0601 code which is no communication. This truck had a melted fusable link and several other fuses out when I bought it , but it does run pretty well. Do you think there could be a problem at the bus terminal? Where is it located? The service manual is FULL of information, but I have litt;le experience with this system.

P0601 PCM Internal Ctrller Failure

Doesn't say WHICH controller though..... Does everything else work right??

Does the gauge test when you start the engine? (I think when you hit start, the gauge should sweep to full? don't quote me on that though..... )

Have you tried clearing the codes, and see if that one resets? I would be curious as to cause and effect there, the burnt wires and such may have caused the code??

Did you figure out what fried the fusible link? Fix that first.
Make sure whatever fried that fusible link is fixed or you could end up frying the new PCM.
Also a Chilton’s or Haynes manual will have wire schematics which will help with the wiring.

thanks guys, good advice, don't give me that look but,...I took her . ( its DD= Dad's Dodge) out today for a road trip down to S.A. and half way back she started reading just over half a tank. So you know what thaqt means . Do you know if there is a cover in the bed to access to sending unit. Its an 01 extracab 4 wheel. And I really should get a second opinion on that check engine code . I did try to clear it . but it never went off.

Gotta drop the tank, or pull the bed, to get to the fuel sending unit.

I suggest getting a Haynes over Chilton...after buying a chiltons to start then buying a Haynes later, I threw the chilton away, it's really crappy compared to a Haynes. Just my too cents.

Oh and welcome to DF

Nothing beats a diagram. I got ahold of a complete service manuel. Thats how I found the fusable link out . I have only had this truck 2 weeks , so I keep finding new stuff to repair. I got this truck from a government auction so its any ones guess what kind of mischief this thing will get me into. And so far what ever took out that link hasn't showed up...And now its been over three hundred miles. ( knock on wood).
