i just bought a set of old 80's style dodge rims from a ram charger. the rims are too wide to fit, they are rubbing my tie rod end. should i get spacers? or should i machine the rim a little. and if so, what spacers? how expensive? it's a 2wd ram 1500, and i really like the rims
I guess I would search ebay for them to see how much they are (spacers) since the backspacing is different from 80's ramchargers...I have 15" rims and they work fine with correct backspacing...
If it's just a tiny bit of rub you could grind the TRE a little bit but be extremely careful. I did this on my old jimmy, just had to take down the edge a bit for it to clear the rim. Taking much material off can compromise the strength of the joint but it can be done.
Gord.
how much are we talking about grinding off the tie rod ? maybe 1/8 or 3/16? that'd probably be ok. i'd grind the corner of a tie rod before i would the wheel. +1 on "damn a spacer".
PLEASE, for the love of God, DO NOT USE WHEEL SPACERS ON A TRUCK. It's a recipe for disaster. It puts you and everyone else on the road in danger.
X10!!!! Pick up August's issue of Off-Road magazine (Yes, the one with the sweet Dodge on the Front!!!). They have an article showing the damage of what happens when you put spacers and stupid large tires on a truck.
Put the wheels you bought on Craigslist and buy some that fit.
