Default Please help. Water pump

I'm replacing my water pump and I cannot get the bolt off that his holding the fan to the pully that's attached to the water pump. Whenever I put a wrench on that nut the pully just turns with it. I tried using a strap wrench to keep it from spinning on me while I pull on that nut but it wont work. Any suggestions?

leave the fan attached. unbolt the 8 or so bolts that hold the water pump to the timing cover. then remove or cut the bypass hose in the back. then lift out the fan, water pump and probably the fan shroud all at once.

that's what i had to do.

edit - take note of which bolts are which. some are very long, some are short, and one of them is a funky torx head or something.

Just took off my h20 pump today too. I held the pulley with a chain grip. They are made by Irwin, and look like vise grips but with a chain attached to them. They are made for holding round metal such as pipes or pulleys. Worked like a charm. Also be careful not to damage the heater return hose (metal pipe going into pump). Not cheap.

You can also use a large flat head screwdriver and wedge it between the pulley and the back side of it, then use a wrench to pull it off.

Default What I did.

I used a 4' chain and attached a hook to one end and wrapped the other end around the frame under the battery. I attached the links around the frame with a bolt and nut with some washers. Be careful of anything that can be damaged from the chain. When you turn the fan nut, the chain will tighten and keep the fan pulley from turning. I used a chain that would be used for hanging florescent lights.
