Ok, just replaced the chain 5 minutes ago, but I want to be certain it is right. When I pulled the old chain/gears off, all the slack in the chain was on the right hand side. I put new chain/gears on without turning anything, and keyways lined up nicely. Does this mean I am good to go, or could I still be off 1 tooth 'cause of the slack in the old chain??? Please help! Is there a way to check this?

 

You should be fine. Post a pic if you aren't sure and somebody will verify.

 

So if the timing dots on the new gears both point straight up, I am good? That's the way it is now, but before I would have been 1 tooth off. Guess there was a little play in the old chain.

 

If both dots are at 12 O'clock AND the #1 piston is at TDC then YES, it's good.

Play in the chain can make it appear that it's a tooth off.

 

I never made sure that #1 was at TDC. I just got it all back together now. Was gonna let the rtv cure overnight and then start/run it tomorrow. Now I'm scared.

It won't let me post a pic because my attachments are over quota. How can I fix that to post a pic of how I put the chain on?

 

Use a service like photobucket and upload the photo and paste/post the pic's IMG code to the forum.

Or, compress the pic with MS Office Picture Manager or some photo utility until it's small enough to post.

 

The pic was taken in 1 megapixel size, so its a small pic, but my dodgeforum attachment quota is full. Can I not empty it?

I think you'd have to delete any previously uploaded photos. Not sure how to do that as I never use the DF photo system.

 

i understand how you feel atc...i have a cloyes chain going on soon..i have all my stuff for hughes, chain etc just sittin in the back of my truck. just havent had time, but the timing chain was my biggest worry...from what the haynes manual said, the top sprocket dot needs top point at 6oclock and the bottom sprocket needs to point at 12...

but from what ive heard you can just pull off the old chain and throw the new one on without doing any turning...the sprockets can only go on a certain way due to the keyways...i would do photobucket. easy to use and free.

i have a question for you though. 1) how did you remove the old chain set 2) what did you use to remove the fan system

i couldnt find a wrench big enough to bust the nut
