Is it possible the old plugs were not the correct length?

Can you snap a pic of the front of that NGK carton and post up? Mine have always come in little boxes, I'm wondering if just maybe you got a hold of some racing plugs.

Here's the NGK part # ZFR6F-11

Here's the stock number 4291

I gap them bigger than .040, but that's because I run an MSD box and .042 seems to run the best. I wouldn't go bigger on a stock ignition system.

*Let me check the P/N just so we know which P/Ns are in question on those NGKs. I've got two spare sets of those. Hang on. Oh, I see Aim's already covered it, never mind.

Well I just got back from town, I took an old plug with me this time and found a set of the vpowers, FR5 instead of the FR5-1's I had at first. These ones appear to be the same as the FR5-1, but with the correct reach. I'm gonna try em I think, got no choice now if I want the truck for morning...

fr5 is one heat range hotter than fr6. Run them and get to where you're going , but then order the right ones asap.

Well I put the plugs in, didn't do the cap and rotor yet due to rain and bugs and darkness.... I took it for a drive and it works great, seems to work better already but that might be in my head after seeing the old plugs....

Aim, everywhere's I checked called for the FR5's, not the FR6's.... I'll try em for a bit and see how they work after I get everything changed...

Here's a pic of the ones I ended up using, didn't get a pic of the other ones...

Here's the cap and rotor, brass of course thanks to you guys

I'm gonna do the indexing thing, I did a couple of them but the flies got toooo bad to deal with haha, so I'll do them tomorrow when I do the rest...

man, that might just be very old packaging. might have to cross reference with NGK to see if the numbers are up to date.

got a 70's feel to it

that is older packaging I would say, most of the v powers were in a sealed plastic type package, but these ones and a few others were in this cardboard and plastic pack, and I could see them in the new type packaging about 6-8 packs back on the rack but I couldn't be bothered to pull them all off to get at them...

If you guys dont mind, i have a quick question about indexing. I know what indexing is and all but, what position is the intake valve? Ive heard the plug should be between 9 and 3, but thats pretty broad. Should it be right at 12, or more to the 9-11 range.

Did a little bit of research...

1998 Dodge Rams (V8s) come up on several auto parts websites as needing the FR5-1 plug, part number 7252, rather than the ZFR6F-11 (4291) that the 2001s call for.

Autozone list the two separate plugs, while Advance Auto lists the 4291 for both model years (for examples).

I would do what everyone else has hinted at or suggested here, and grab a set of ZFR6F-11 plugs. Don't ask the salesmen to look up which plug is for you, ask straight up for a 4291 NGK V-power. If he wants to check vehicle fitment, tell him not to worry about it, or tell him you have a 2001.
