Default PCM Questions

Hey guys,

I have been coming on this site for months now basically just browsing and bouncing around. I have noticed that you know more then the (stealership). I have a question about my PCM/ECM. It went bad about 6 months ago. The check engine light came on and ran the codes and it showed the P0601 "Check Sum Error".

I have a 2001 Ram 5.2 AT
The ECM P/N is P56040269AE

Now from what I have been reading on the forum is that the last two number on the part number is the Update Code. I called around to the local salvage yards and there is one about 40 miles away that has a PCM from a '01 Ram 5.2 AT and the beginning of the P/N is the same, however the last two letters are AB.

The next part of the headache is the dealership and their lack of knowledge or trying to rob me blind through my assumed lack of knowledge. They are telling me that for the '01 PCM I would have to bring in the used PCM and they would have to send it away to get wiped and then when they get it back they can flash the vin and milage into it.

From what I understand all I would have to do is bring it to them and have them flash it but they are telling me that once a VIN# is burned in they have to send it away. The used PCM from the yard is $100 and for them to send it away and flash it they want $400.

I could use some input and if anyone has been told this before?

MAV

Can the dealership flash the used PCM without sending it away.

You could probably fix it yourself by purchasing a tuner from hemifever, you can reach him right here on this site. For 275 you would get a MUCH better tune than any the dealership would give you.
