I hear ya, get yourself a K&N precharger that you can throw on right before you go mudding. When I used to race ATV motocross, everyone with a K&N setup always had these prechargers, seemed to keep all the mud and sand off the filter, and was waterproof to a certain extent. Ofcourse you can't submerge it, but if you were to spray water on it, the filter would remain dry.

It is one of these guys...
