Default 97 Ram tranny problems

I have a 2500 5.9 auto 2wd that I screwed the tranny up on. I called a junk yard and bought a replacement. Turns out they sold me a 1500 tranny instead of the 2500 and it appears to be about 1/2 to 3/4 inch shorter and the drive shaft won't connect correctly. Anyone have any such experience? Is there any way to compensate and make this work, or are myself and my mechanic crazy thinking there is this small difference?

Thanks

1500 uses the same tranny as the 2500, UNLESS it is a diesel, or V-10.
