Default AwShucks (paint issue)

in 1996 I bought a white slt 4X4 and the last several years the paint flies of like its sheding. I painted the liftgate and used non stick blue masking tape and when I pulled up the tape the paint comes with it. It's a Bogus Factory paintjob. Do I have a good beef with Dodge.? Do I have any Recoarse?

No you have 0 recourse. A lot of the issues with your paint issue is sun-damage.

14 year old truck and you expect Chrysler to do anything about it? Don't think so slick.

If I were you, I would start saving pennies and prepare for a new paint job. I say that because with red and white trucks, the color is a complete pain to match and blend. Couple in age, sun damage, and pigment variations and you start to see the issue. Not to mention, if you plan on keeping this truck for longer than a couple of more years, then you want the whole truck to be one color only. If you only repair the section, be prepared to notice different shades on the truck as a whole. Take my truck for example, the bed panels were painted in 2004 and the hood was painted in 2005. The whole truck now has about four different shades of red going on. It looked good when it was done, but over time, the color has faded. Older sections of paint look lighter and the newer ones are lightening up a bit, but not as much. (Couple that with the dry spray and it looks like hell)

Oh, If you plan on doing a full on paint job, expect to go through about 1 1/2-2 gallons of paint depending on who sprays the color and how well you want to do the job.

You can add dark blue and silver to the mix. My 97 Ram 2500 is doing the same thing. Back in the mid to late 90's I worked at a GM dealer and blues, reds, blacks, silvers had what they called paint delamination. What happened was the paint didn't adhere to the primer coat. The test was simple, masking tape and any paint that stuck. Back then the primer and color coat were only 3 mils thick on the high side. Vehicles had to be stripped, primered and sprayed. No luck on Dodge taking care of it. My truck only had 34k on the clock when it started happening to mine.

Well, the problem with the blue and silvers was the materials. None of them liked to bond to anything and that's why you saw them start to flake off early in life. I'm sure they were hell to mix as well though.

To fix it right, you are going to have to scrub off ALL the old paint. On GM vehicles that had the same problem, it was the primer they used.... the paint wouldn't bond to it very well, and couple that with being parked outside, and you end up with a primer colored truck. GM did some repairs on that for a while, but, none of the vehicles I saw get painted were over 10 years old, and were all under 100,000 miles.
