Default Uh Oh whats that noise mean???

97 Ram 360 auto trans

Hold the gas pedal just right and it sounds fine. Accelerate and it has a fairly high pitched whine, decelerate and it has an even higher pitched whine.

Sounds like my grand pa's old massey ferguson when it's holding back or my arctic cat ATV makes the same noise so I'm sure it's in the gears.

Will also moan like a power steering pump that's low when you're braking to a stop (very low speed) or coasting thru a traffic light.

Input shaft bearing?

Shifts fine and doesn't slip at all.

So you think it is coming from your engine compartment? Is the whine consistent with you acceration/deceleration? Does it make the whine while cold, or only when its running warm?

it's coming from under the truck

I test drove this truck 2 times off of a lot in Louisville 8-10 mile drives, no problems.

It started making some noise on the interstae coming home (I hoped it was tire noise) after about 115 miles it started getting very noisy and I haven't started the truck since I got home (lettin it cool).

It is constant. I had a standard shift ford one time that made a similar whine noise when you let off the gas, but not nearly this bad.

does it whine at one pitch when accelerating, and then growl at a lower pitch when coasting. that's pinion bearing or ring/pinion, most likely the bearing.

it could be tire noise, especially if they are cupped on the edge.

Definitely not tire noise. I thought ring and pinion too (still not sure) but when I kick it in neutral it gets quieter

I got it up on the stands this morning...

Looks like the pionion seal gave out, no iol in the rearend.

Re filled and it seemed fine (but did get some wear out of the deal). I'm off to the parts store to get a seal and get it in today.
