I have a 97 and it as two. a precat and one behind the cat( back about 2 foot) I dont know how often they go. it might be the cat itself. i guess it all depends on where you live. I replaced my cat a few weeks ago. i got a magnaflow high flow cat. it works great. what sucks for me is that it passed inspection and i just replaced it to get more power and sound. when i cut off the old one and got it out from under the truck, i looked inside and saw that there was nothing in it at all. also the cat only cost about 90.00 my be expencive for some people but i think good O2 sensers go for like 65 and you may need to. i did have to buy a new o2 sensor anyway because mine was stuck in the old cat and i needed a cutting torch to get it out. hope that helps.

you can test the cat by measuring the input temperature and comparing it to the output temp. the output should be hotter than the input. if it is, change the o2's and the plugs. that should help it out... I went thru this on my M3 and that's exactly how I had to fix it...
