I have never heard of/seen the "extreme" mufflers. I have the Super 44, still sounds the same to me after a little more than two years of having it. Still like it.

I'm with jasonw on this one. Never heard of the 'extreme' version of our Super 44 mufflers...I believe the only difference to be is the 14 gauge diamond plate case. But after 16 months, the sound and tone of the muffler is the same. Great mufflers for our trucks! Also got my buddy to chop his flow 40 muff out to change to the Super 44 cuz he loved the way is sounded. The 44 version is def nicer, so you can't go wrong. I love mine

I'd have to disagree with you. If you look it up on Flowmaster's website, the Super 44 is their loudest muffler.

Now, you may be louder than my Super 44, and many others, simply because of how "decked out" your truck is with upgrades/modifications. However, if you and I had the exact same engine and exhaust setups with the only exception being the muffler, the Super 44 would be louder.

That being said, louder does not necessarily == better. The 40 may sound better than the Super 44, I have no idea, never had a friend with a truck that had a 40 series on it to compare. On top of that, it is a great deal of personal preference as to what sounds better.

I have several buddies with similair exhaust setups, and the 44 muffler was clearly the nicer sounding muffler. Not saying it's louder, but the tone is nicer IMO. A friend of mine liked it so much he changed his 40 to 44 muffler and was much happier with how it sounded. Supposedly, flowmaster claims the Super 44 to be superior to the regular 40 muffler... But headers, and gutted or high-flow cat can make a big difference in how it sounds. Mine is gutted cat only.

Mufflers don't typically change tone, unless filled with a non-metallic material that can degrade over time. Since these are all metal, you shouldn't have any problems with a change in sound...now you could just decide to get rid of the mufflers and then not worry about it at all ...

The 40 series are a very common choice of truck owners in my area and they are pretty loud... I have 44s on my 98 single cab with edelbrock headers and a 3.5 inch tip exiting before the rear tire. the 40 series definatley give off a different sound than my 44s but not sure if they are louder my 44s just give off a deeper and more agressive sound. I would recommend the 44s over the 40s any day!

I know this is off topic but whats a gutted cat? Does that just mean you removed the catalytic converter?
