Default probably computer or cps help??

I've searched the internet for hours, and tried several diagnostic tests, however I am still clueless as to what my problem may be.

1996 5.9l 4x4 46re

After rebuilding the trans, the truck died a little while later. will crank, but not run. I hooked up my code reader, and it said "error" as if if couldn't connect to the computer.

My asd relay is good. I can't figure out however how to test the CPS or the actual computer. I do have 5 volts coming into the plug for the CPS, resistance is zero across the cps any way i measure it.

I have seen some other tests describe online, but I can't figure out which pins they are referring to.
Basically I need a dummy explanation of diagnostics to determine which part/s may be faulty.

heres a link to one of the tests... I am not sure however which pin/s on the PDS he is referring to https://dodgeforum.com/forum/dodge-r...g-battery.html

thanks for any help. I don't have much experience yet dealing with electronic diagnostics, but I will learn what I can

ok poked around a little more today. the cps is getting 5 volts on the first terminal. the second terminal has good ground. when i connect the second and third terminal i do have a slight resistance reading.
if i unplug it and plug it back in with ignition on, the transmission relay will click, as will the ASD relay.
when I unplug it, I hear a whining noise (sounds similiar to fuel pump but it's coming from engine bay) not sure what this is.

anybody have any ideas on how to test the CPS and the computer more accurately??

The PCM is near impossible to check and the CPS is hard to test because the motor needs to be running or at least rotating. And the PDC referred to in the link you provided is the black plastic box next to the battery.

ok. well i hate to throw money at it, but i'll try getting a new sensor, it's only 30 bucks. if that doesn't fix it, would that point to the computer then?

And, any explanation or idea for why this problem would occur? the CPS i could see being bumped when I reinstalled the tranny, but why would the computer go? especially imediately after a rebuild?

I know this may sound really stupid- but have you tried the ignition on (but no start) three times for error code thingy?

+1. And I was also going to suggest trying a different scanner.

yes i have, though that trick has never worked for me in the past. the scanner is known to be good, I can hook it up to a different vehicle I have and pull codes off that one..

Well what have you done? Did you replace the sensor? You should download this and look for all the ground wires and check them. https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...-gen-rams.html . Because obviously even if the CPS was/is damaged, it's not going to give a PCM error. So check the grounds, make sure the one on the back of the passenger side head above the CPS didn't get pulled off.

what are you calling CPS ? crank position sensor or cam position sensor.

its very very common to damage the crank position sensor in an engine or trans swap. i'd just replace it. after all the engine ran, you removed and replaced the trans, and now the engine won't run. you never touched the engine and the only elec plugs you removed were transmission related right ? replace crank sensor. note - no personal experience but some people swear that a non-mopar crank sensor is bad half the the time. idk.

edit - by the way - don't unplug/replug sensors with ignition on. you can damage your very expensive pcm.
