Default Rearend Noise

2000 ram 1500 4x4 slt. I have a whinning noise comming from my rearend that increases and decreases with speed. Still does it when in nuetral. Have put new tires on and the tranny is only a year old. Put it up on a lift and put it in drive but cannot locate exactly where the noise is comming from. Fluid level is fine and looks clean...Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Probably a bearing going bad. With it up on the rack, try turning things by hand. Usually, you can feel a bad bearing. (everything should turn smooth as butter.)

If it does it while its in neutral, it shouldnt be your rear end making the noise, since the driveshaft doesnt spin in neutral... Unless I read something wrong.

I assumed (yeah, yeah, I know) he meant 'coasting' in neutral....

Sounds like the pinion bearing maybe. Check to see if you have any unusual play. up-down/side-to-side/ in-out.
