Slack steering...help!!!
Ok got another question. My steering has felt very lose for a long time now. So last weekend i replaced the center link and tie rods and a couple tie rod ends. Im for sure that the old parts were shot and it does feel better now but still not perfect. Im goin in Friday to get it aligned but I dont think that would make the steering titer, would it? Anyways I guess my question is, what other parts could there be going wrong? Thanks for any input!
you can remove play in the wheel by tightening up the adjustment in the steering box. it improved mine 100%. look in the diy at the top of the 2nd gen. loosen the locknut and tighten the center screw about 1/4 round at a time.
mine was the pitman arm. I had about 3" of play in the steering (roughly), and, while it was tight, it still felt a little loose. Put a pitman arm on there, all better. Its about $40, but, $40 well spent.
Get underneath your truck and locate the pitman arm, and have someone move the steering wheel back and forth. Any play should be noticeable. If you see the arm out of the box moving, but, a slight delay before the pitman arm moves, its the pitman arm. If that stuff is all moving in sync, then, it may be the adjustment in the box.
But...careful when adjusting the box, there is a such thing as too far.

Ok, I checked out the pitman arm and there isnt any slack in it but there was plenty of slack in the steering box. I tightened the steering box probebly about a full 3 turns and it responded much better. Now that it is much tighter it feels like there is something lose in the steering column that is jiggling through the wheel. I think I probebly need a new steering column but at least the steering isnt slack anymore. Thanks for all the input!
I think there is a collar, or bushing, at the bottom of the column (in the engine compartment) that has a lot of play in it from the factory. There are aftermarket replacement bushing out there in the world, but, they run around 70 bucks, I think.
Here ya go. And cheaper than I thought.
