Default gas tank issues

ok well first off its a 2001 dodge ram 5.9l gas 3/4 ton truck.

well the problems im haveing is 1st off the trucks tank is a 31 gallon tank but it reads full with 22 galons it will still take 31 gallons tho....

2nd problem is now since the past few months a cuple times it will read 1/8th a tank and run out of gas or seems like its just not getting enough, it ran for a wile and then dies i put gas in and reads as tho the 1/8th was there the whole time.

what i was thinking is that maby it has the wrong fuel pump then whats in it. or maby its a cloged fuel filter or even both

Should be either 26, or 35. I was not aware of a 31 gallon tank..... Request a build sheet from your local dodge dealer. (just needs your vin, and not even the whole thing..... ignore the power rack and pinion steering dodge thinks you have though, you won't find it.....) That should tell you what size tank you have.

As HeyYou suggested, get a build sheet from the dealer. You have a 34 or 35 gallon tank. There is NO 31 gallon tank.(and a 26 gallon tank is not going to take 31 gallons) The extra you are seeing is just a combination of the gauge in these things not being all that accurate and there is a reserve. As far as it running out of gas with an 1/8 of a tank showing, the gauge or the sending unit on the pump is bad.

Might be a replacement tank so pics would help. Also if you have a non-standard replacement tank it may help explain your issue. I agree with the others choices are 26 and 35 from factory based on bed length.

Speaking of pics post lots of anything you dig into. I have the 35 gallon tank and this morning I read 1/4 tank, driving to work then 3/4 when I came out. I have actually stopped trusting my gauge and use the the trip ODO more than the needle. My light does still come on with 8 gallons remaining very consistently though.

During the later model years (maybe even the earlier ones), 2500 quad cabs had the option for a 34 gallon tank. Otherwise, the 8 foot bed = 35 and 6 foot bed = 26 rule applies.

Are you sure its not either a replacement tank or that part of the "4" in "34" isn't very visible/come off/rub off?
