Default starting problems

hey guys.. i recently installed the hughes plenum plate on my truck and after installing it it seems to have trouble starting. i have to hold the throttle down about halfway for it to kick in and once it kicks in it blows some black smoke and wants to konk out so i have to keep the throttle held down for a bit until it idles normal. once it idles normal it runs like a champ. we've replaced the o-rings on the injectors and tested vacuum and its at a steady 18in-mg.. does anyone have any suggestions on what else it might be? thanks a lot

Edit: ok now im havin more problems.. when im driving any time i let off the gas and start comin to a stop the engine will stall so i have to keep the gas held down a bit so it wont.. itll also stall when i put it in park and let off the gas.. does anyone have any idea whats goin on? thanks

Definitely check your plenum for oil. Then check back with us. Also make note of the oil pressure levels.

By the way, Nice Truck!

Why does he have to check the plenum? He replaced it with a Hughes!

DodgeRamYou, Did you do a tune up too? And replace the precat o2 sensor? Did you clean the TB and IAC sensor?

I suggest you try cleaning the IAC and the port in which it installs into. Just spray the IAC and gently wipe it clean, don't push it in or rotate it while cleaning. And disonnect the neg. battery cable before you start the work. Also make sure the ECT and IAT are plugged in and not damaged.

P0118 ECT Sens Voltage Too Hi
P0505 Idle Air Ctrl Motor Circs

Check voltages on both of those. If your ECT took a dump, it could be lying to the PCM, and telling it that it is -240 degrees...... in which case, your PCM will literally DUMP fuel... and you will run EXTREMELY rich. If it runs at all.

Clear that one up first, reset the computer, and see if the IAC code resets.

I'm glad I mentioned the ECT. AT least I think I was on the right track. lol If you get a Haynes manual or download the FSM https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...-gen-rams.html you can test most of the sensors with a voltmeter.

yes the ect problem sounds like what i have.. because my truck blows black smoke on start up from too much gas which is why i have to hold the throttle down a bit for it to start.. however i noticed that i didnt have one of the throttle body sensors plugged back in from before =P i plugged that in.. and it starts alot better than before but its still a bit sluggish and i have to hold the throttle in a wee bit for it to start.. so ill check into the ect sensor and see whats up with that

thanks alot for all the help
