Default Need help asap! TansProblem

HELP! so i do i tranny flush the otherday and i find pieces of metal orings in the pan. Upon further insepection, i was not able to notice any damage in the bands or anything. almost 100% sure its from my over drive unit. truck now whines when accelerating and decelerating. i know im going to need a new transmission and transfer case at this point because i can pretty much hear some crazy sounds coming from them when i drove it on my buddys lift the other day. (did the screwdriver to the hear test) Wierd thing is nothing slips, 4x4 works and the only problem i have is occasionally on highway it comes in and out of O/D. Im am prepared to put a new transmission and transfer case in but what transmission should i get (used) will the 01 fit? or any from 94-01 for 5.2 4x4. any tips or advice on preventing the replacement from having problems?

you will need a 46RE transmission, thats from 96-01....94 and 95 came with a 46RH, so those wont be compatible...

and do you have any pics of what you got out of the pan?

Default 46re

i went to the junk yard earlier today looking for a tranny, i was told only the 98-99 would fit it but they wouldnt say why. it was pieces of metal, when u put the togeather the form a circle, looks like a spacer or something maybe 6" in diameter if i put everything togeather into a full circle. is it true the 2000-2001 had less problems than the 96-99? i have heard this from a few people and my friend has a 2001 off road edition with the 5.9 which has 180k on it without a rebuild. i always thought they were the same trannys for the 5.2 and 5.9 but maybe im wrong

That would be your OD snap ring. Very common failure. If you haven't drove on it much and the fluid isn't terribly burned, you could get away with just having the OD unit rebuilt.

ive drove on it for about 500 miles so far, but have done 3 transmission flushes. everything still shifts and works fine. the overdrive unit is in the back of the transmission, if i do that i might as well rebuuild the whole thing, and because i need a new tourque converter and transfer case anyway, it just makes sense to get a new one or rebuild this one. i have never rebuilt a tranny before and dont really want to pay the price to have someone do it for me. so im thinking just puting another one in myself is my best bet. plus i want to do my rear main seal while im at it so it will just make everything easier

Check the fluid level in your transfer case. Might just be low.

Why do you need a new transfer case? You definitely need a new transmission if you've gone 500 miles with a broken OD snap ring. Usually when that snap ring lets go it's a matter of a few miles until you start burning clutch packs and lose all gears.

If you can't afford to have it rebuilt and have no experience rebuilding a transmission, your best bet is a salvage transmission. My advice is to pick up a used one (warranty is always good, although not worth a lot), get a NEW torque converter, new filter, new front pump seal, rear seal, transfer case input seal, adjust the bands, flush the cooler lines, install an aux. cooler, and remove the check ball if it hasn't been done already.

Now is a good time to install a shift kit too, as you'll be a lot happier with the new transmission and it will stretch it's lifespan out a little.
