It's a 2wd 5.9. I checked the steering shaft and found alittle play not very much at all. Could it be binding inside the box itself???????????

if there was binding going on inside the gear box, then it probably be pretty hard to turn the steering wheel while parked or moving...does the steering wheel move fairly easily in either or both of these conditions?

i know this sounds silly, but have you made sure all the joints (i.e ball joints, tie rod end joints) have been properly greased, and that the nuts on each of the joints have been torqued to spec?

i would also look at the steering stabilizer, the track bar (plus the joint where it meets the frame, and the stud bolt on the opposite end), and sway bar (plus bushings)
