Default Proper Borgeson Shaft Installation

96 2500, V-10

I just installed the Rock Solid Ram Truck Steering Fix bushing deal. Anyhow, I'm going to put it back together tomorrow and got to thinking about the Borgeson shaft that I installed earlier. Someone posted that the intermediate shaft should always be able to telescope like the original shaft. The Borgeson comes with a lock ring which I locked in place right at the intersecting point of the two shafts, making them effectively one shaft. Is this incorrect? Thanks.

Install it with the lock ring(as the direction say). Trust me, if you get in a crash it will slide.

Sounds like you had first hand experience.

No I have not thank God. I just know all that holds the ring is place is a small set screw .

Mine didn't come with any directions. (I ordered it off of eBay). I see your point about the set screw, however, I was referring to normal driving. Another poster had mentioned that the shaft should be free to slide as there was movement between the cab and the steering box. I've had lots of trucks with a solid shaft. Just wondered. Thanks.

There shouldn't be much movement.... unless your body mounts are rotted out. Installing as you have, should be just fine.

You don't install the lock ring tight to the outer shaft. All you do is push it up until it touches the rubber boot.

Default Thanks

Zman, thanks a million for those directions. They clear up two issues for me.
First, the one that I have been posting about re placement of the lock ring. I'm going to slide it down a bit today.
Secondly, one that has been bothering me on the Borgeson. I noted when I installed it that it didn't fit the stock setup exactly. i.e. the column end fit on the column shaft properly but then the bottom end (to steering box splined shaft) didn't line up on the shaft flat spot. I thought maybe it was assembled improperly or something. Anyhow, I simply tightened the allen screw onto the shaft where it hit. Now I see that I just need to create a flat for it so I'll do that too. Amazing what some instructions can do!

I test drove it around the block yesterday after installing the Rock Solid bushing and noted that it is probably 80% improved in the clatter. There's still something going on down there so I remain on the hunt.

Glad I could help. Now check the lower shock bolts.
