Default S&B air intakes?

I was wondering if this was a good system as compared to k&n, AFE and AEM.I have a 318 btw so if this intake system gave the same results as the other brands i think i might jump on it.

there is someone on here with the S&B and was very happy with it, IIRC its fully inclosed which is a good thing, and K&N is not fully inclosed so I think its better.

his name is 97ram or something like that hopefully he will see this soon

The S&B intakes do not make the same power increase as the K&N CAI. Which is minimal anyways, K&N makes about 9HP gain at 5400RPM.

The reason is cuz S&B pulls air from the stock opening in the pass quarter panel...same as stock location. K&N pulls air from the front of the engine bay in an open area behind the pass side headlight surrounded by large heat shields to create a good amount of space to pull colder air.

Heres the S&B intake

I don't care what anyone says...K&N has been proven to be the BEST CAI intake on the market for our trucks...however that comes with a price..paid $265 for mine. If you just want a cheap intake make it your self out of PVC plastic tubing or get the Spectre CAI for half the price of the S&B

BigSlick, where did you get those horsepower claims from? Probably from K&N am I right?

The S&B is great, it is priced less than the K&N and pulls just as much air. The hole in the fender well is not what makes the stock unit restrictive, and it doesn't make the S&B anymore restrictive than a K&N setup, not to mention it is pulling in cooler air. My Scangauge has proof of that.

Here are some pics of my S&B

To the OP, yes it is worth it, I noticed a nice gain in pulling power, as well as a 1-2mpg increase. They are a great company to deal with as well, I ordered mine directly through them. If you can afford another 40 buccs might want to look into a Volant.

Hey they have the dyno testing to prove it...

If S&B is just as good or better, where is their HP claim? Did you really get a 1-2 MPG increase? I just find it hard to believe...as I only gained .2 - .4 MPG off the K&N setup.

I never said it was better, but it is priced better. Did I really get a 1-2mpg increase? Yes I did, I have a Scangauge2 to verify that my average highway mileage has increased, not to mention I also figure my mileage by hand on paper.

With the stock setup I was averaging about 15.5-16 with a city/highway mix.

With the S&B that has increased to nearly 17.5 city/highway mix

Believe it or not I can reach 20mpg highway fairly easily at 55-60mph, anything over 70 and my mileage drops to about 18.2 on the dot.

Keep in mind I have a Regular Cab/ Short Bed, 2wd with a 318, and my truck weighs roughly 4,450 pounds according to the local dump. So my results will vary from yours.

K&N is still the leader in cotton gauze filter setups, I won't discount that, I ran K&N setups on my MX bikes for years, but K&N always claims a pretty good horsepower gain, because THEY are trying to sell you something. Have an outside source do the Dyno run and you might be surprised you only gained .5- 1 horsepower (Same with the S&B). The main increase is just on the butt dyno. If you were to put both intakes on the same truck, and not tell either one of us which one was under the hood, you probably couldn't tell a difference between the two other than sound.

My Scangauge2 will also read the Intake Air temp

At 60mph I got the following readings

Stock Air Box- 145 degrees

14x3 edelbrock- 163 degrees

S&B intake- 123 degrees.

All of these temps were recorded in 100 degree Florida Summer. There is a slight gain to be had there. So it was worth it to me. I would love to get an IAT reading of the K&N FIPK.

I have the Spectre Kit as well and Im really satisfied with it. When it comes to the filters themselves they are all the same K&N, Spectre, S&B. From what Ive read the important thing is the location the air is drawn from, S&B and Spectre draw from the stock box opening which is not really a problem and K&N draws from the front of the truck. Ive heard that the best air intake for our type of trucks are the RAM air intake kits I dont remember the specific brand (Volant I think), but the air forced through the system is taken from a lower section than the other filters and is denser & cooler. Also the price is really good for the Spectre kit but the tubing is the least effective, as it retains the most heat out of all 3 brands.

This is just from my research and not from any personal experiments feel free to call BS.

Now you got me wondering what temperature my K&N setup is...where and how are you measuring the temps? You say with a scangauge2? Where can you find it and how much $$?

In all honesty, I do agree. I think most of these intakes are all closely matched with power gain/fuel economy inprovement. I mean they basically all do the same thing which is it pull more and colder air. The only real differences are the price and 'name branding' .....with K&N I just feel like you are paying for their 'name' cuz they have been 'proven'

Hell I would have gotten the S&B or more likely the Spectre kit with a K&N filter if I didn't have the money at the time

I think we can all agree on that...
