Default What does pinging sound like?

Ever since I put headers on I have heard something that sounds like chatter, but maybe it could be the new acoustics of the exhaust.

It sounds like a faint slapping noise. Metallic.

Is that pinging?

How loud would it be. WOuld you NOT hear it if your windows were rolled down and you are driving at 30 MPH? Because i can't hardly hear it then. Only with the radio off and the windows up.

I think this is paranoia.

Pinging is mostly heard during acceleration in the upper rpm's (under load or WOT). Headers have unique acoustics.

You have a header gasket leak Ill bet. I have one too more days than not. Tighten the bolts and it'll go away for a bit and then it'll return.

Pinging sounds very close to a header leak. So does lifter tick.

If you were to drop a constant stream of marbles onto a piece of sheet metal, that is what pinging sounds like (usually not quite as loud though).

Think of a handful of BB's dropped into a cast iron bathtub.

Yeah, i think it is a header leak. I will tighten them up, and the sound gets better. Then it will come back and i have to retighten.

Well. I guess tightening them will just be a part of my weekly checks.

What is lifter tick? and would that happen to a truck with only 50K miles? I am guessing lifter tick is when they bleed down and can't get filled back with oil.

BTW, this is not only hard acceleration. It is just basically under load. I think it is a header leak.

THese header bolts are really hard to get to.

if it is your header bolts, i would get stage8 locking fasteners. they never come loose. i love them. i even put a little antiseize on them before install so i can get them back out. if they keep coming loose its only a matter of time before your header gasket burns out.

and if your gasket is bad, here is the best one to replace it with in my opinion.

i just installed new plugs autlight 3923 all my problems went away my clatter and the pinging i had ! feels like a new truck ! and now im not afraid to jump on it again hope to try my 93 tune from sct now

also i thought i had an exhaust leak too but after the plugs it went away ! thought it was either drivetran or exhaust ! dunno what was causing that noise !

you have sct too, so maybe plugs get worn quicker ?
