Default New transfer case

So i took my truck to a mechanic to have a u joint replaced....he fixed that and told me i had a hole in my t case. there was a big *** hole in there. bought a used 231d case cause thats what i got. dude puts it in and we get in the truck to check everything out. he puts the 4wd shift **** to neutral and revs the truck and it does not move....i about sh!tt myself and told him that wasnt right. when you shift the 4wd **** on every other ram 1500 ive had to neutral it is in regular drive mode. he tells me no im wrong. i wouldnt be all that concerned about the shift pattern being bass ackwards if my truck didnt have two neutral gears. the dude started flipping out on me when i questioned the install and told me i was getting him mad. what is wrong here? is this douche bag right? when the shift **** is all the way forward it is in two. and he told me two high is the gear i want to be driving in on the road.

Neutral on the tcase and you aren't going anywhere, no matter what the column shifter says.

You most certainly want to be in 2H when on road. 4H on road in bad conditions/weather. NEVER road and 4L.

Your column must be in N to shift 4 lever into 4L. Its been my experience that slightly moving is better.

The douche is right I'm thinkin.

so then why have i had my tcase in neutral on both my 99 and 2000 ram pickups while i drove them? my shift **** was always vertical straight up now it has to be pushed all the way forward and no matter what position i have ever put the shifter in my trucks would never not move.

right or wrong the guy was still a douche i had questions and he just wanted to send me on my way. He started yelling pay me my damn money and was cursing at me. so i dunno maybe im the douche because i took my truck there to have it fixed and got it back and everything was totally different. the linkage pattern is no where near what its supposed to be.

Well dude, sometimes we get worked up and make simple errors we wouldn't usually make. Sometimes personality clashes and we think opposite of what we're being told just so we can oppose the will of who we're talking to because it just feels good to do it- and our need to do that overrides what we know to be true in the back of our minds.

This dude sounds like a jerk, but he is a 'right' jerk none the less. Maybe your shifter has a different pattern represented on lil' emblem than it actually is, making you think you were in N when your actually engaged in a gear.

Something is amiss though, because if your tcase is in neutral, so is your truck. I've never met a tcase that allowed the tranny to engage whilst IT was in neutral.

You are wrong! plain and simply! The transfer case pattern was also changed depending on what year the truck is! And since you don't want to give any relevant info, it's kind of hard to say. And drewactual is right, that truck is NOT moving if the TC is in neutral. I have a 98 and a 2000, both levers are slightly leaning back towards the seats (almost vertical). Depending on WHAT YEAR this current truck is, 2H might be in a completely different location.

Alright i stand corrected but when i told him that my tcasedidnt have a neutral gear ( i guess im wrong) he proceeded to tell me that the transfer case that he just installed was prolly broken. the truck is a 2000. I am actually glad i am wrong. thanks for proving me wrong. none the less the dude was still a douche when all i asked were a few simple questions. Maybe i was a little concerned about my shift pattern being totally wrong.

Well, there is no excuse for the guy being a dick, when you are giving him your hard earned money. Aside from that, put all the info about your truck in your sig, it just make's things a lot easier. And will only take you 2 minutes.

Default transfer case

transfer case

You also don't necessarily live in the best place for a transfer case like this either. Waaga Way (HWY 303) hill can be hard on the transfer case not to mention the other big hills in the area. I know that area all too well. I was just back there in July for my new grandkid and lived for 12 years up near Rolling Hills Golf Course.

I take it you are using the dealership down in Tacoma. How are they treating you? I've heard mixed reviews of them.

I have had a lot of good luck with these guys, transfer cases, they have a bunch of salvage yards across the country
